Over the last four years or so, we’ve spoken to heads of large resort chains and exchange companies, we’ve spoken to stakeholders and project associates, and we’ve spoken to a wide cross-section of customers. The oldest customer we spoke to was 86 years old, and the youngest was thirteen.

Last week, I met a young corporate manager at the golf club. I soon realized that we had similar interests, so I invited him to join me for lunch. Our lunch hour was an amazing window to a young professional’s world, circa 2014. Or maybe 2015, as we have just entered another new year.

I would like to narrate my discussion with him, as five things I learnt about young professionals, over lunch. This is essential reading, for anyone in the hospitality business – right from resort owners, trainers, HR teams, and those interacting directly with customers.

“Houshi” is a short documentary about a family that has run a Japanese hotel for around 1,300 years. Founded in 718, the Houshi Ryokan has been passed down from generation to generation.
