Let’s leave footprints behind at a vacation spot, not garbage

What I find absolutely shocking is the amount of litter we can generate – especially on vacation. Cigarette butts, water bottles, biscuit & chocolate wrappers, empty foil packs, paper plates, food remnants – the list goes on and on.

On a forest or cross-country trek for instance, we need to carry along a convenient dump bag with us that can contain litter the group typically generates – each one of us could also carry our own individual dump bags if that can make things simpler. I’ve seen litter being dropped from tourist boats along picturesque stretches of river – and this tends to
float or even sink to be swallowed by fish. (And that spins off a whole new set of problems . . .)

Don’t worry about home, when on vacation :)

In one of our earlier features we shared tips on packing your bags when you go on a vacation – this month our feature story is on what you need to keep in mind even before you start packing your bags. We share a compilation of tips and guidelines you can consider that will ensure peace of mind and a feeling of total control over the situation.

We’ve heard of instances where the husband asks the wife some really “too-late-to-answer” questions. Did you switch off the lights in the bedroom? Did you turn off the TV? Did we roll down the garage door and sling a lock? (The questions go on and on, and can bring on worry lines even before you even reach your destination.)

So, we thought we would compile a list of tips that should come in useful – please make a mental note of these suggestions, or take a print out for easy reference. These tips come to you from people who are in related fields when it comes to customer advice and support.

Packing your bags for your annual vacation

Packing your holiday bags is not as simple picking sets of clothing for each day you’re on vacation. You need to plan what goes into your bags – depending on destination, holiday season and what your resort guide recommends. Most of the time we don’t really look at the “guideline” mails sent to us by customer assistance, because we just don’t have the time. But that’s where things can go wrong.

A beach side location for instance would call for shorts, tees, Bermudas and flip flops as your move around clothes. A jungle lodges location on the other hand would call for something that’s trendy but close to army camouflage clothing, if you want to call it that. Of course what season you have in mind would also be a prime consideration. A summer vacation would call for something summery, and a winter vacation would likewise get you pulling out some woollies.

Enivronment awareness for tourists

This month we touch upon a tourism issue that is being taken seriously in the hospitality industry – “the concern for environment protection on a vacation”. So while more and more people are getting aware about the need to do something, where do you go from here?

Let’s talk about the industry that we are in – timeshare, or vacation ownership.

On the one hand resort owners need to drive the implementation of ecotourism practices at their resorts. You can start with outlining a set of easy-to-understand guidelines that visitors and tourists can follow. At a second level you need to go from awareness to implementation – by helping your guests follow these guidelines.

A good place to start is aiming to protect the environment around us – living spaces where forests survive, water bodies retain their pristine state – and where animal and bird life don’t feel threatened by the presence of visitors, or tourists.

Talking to Food & Travel blogger, Riya Patel

Take that vacation – you’re bound to meet interesting people, and sometimes that can be very, very inspirational. On my recent trip to Goa, I had the opportunity of meeting Odette Mascarenhas – television host, celebrated author and a critic of culinary preparations – she is also the inspiration behind the Goan Culinary Club.

And remember that we all need a little break once in a while, as it helps us work better. Try reading through various travel blogs, they will definitely encourage you to get off that work chair and travel more often. I invariably have a bag ready and packed for a vacation, but because of my hectic job I don’t get to travel much. But when I get that chance to travel, I make good use of it.

Top European Timeshare Destinations

Corfu, Rome and Ibiza are all proving popular with Brits this year, with the first receiving 100 per cent more interest than at the start of the year.

The recent Travelnomics UK Quarterly Industry Insight: Q2 April – June 2009 survey from CheapFlights.co.uk shows that timeshare holidays are often taken in these locations, with Sharron Livingston, editor at thetravelmagazine.net, saying this comes as no surprise.

“Corfu offers a sleep-easy style in ancient, lush environs, Rome’s winning combination of religious sites like the Vatican City, its ancient Roman ruins, stylish shops and gastronomy hits the spot for culture vultures,” she said.

The expert added that Greece, Italy and Spain have always been very popular with British holidaymakers.

While Corfu topped the poll for locations timeshare holidaymakers are likely to pick, Athens, Bodrum, Palma and Malta also came in the top ten, as well as some UK destinations.

Rome saw 54 per cent more interest in the second quarter of the year, compared to the first, while Ibiza’s popularity rose by 40 per cent.
