When I stay at hotels or timeshare resorts, I usually spend time, chatting with people who are at the customer interface – especially those in front office, guest relations and room service. These are people who anticipate your every need – answering calls, delivering meals, cleaning rooms, carrying your bags, and helping make your stay comfortable.

According to human resource consultants, the people factor rates very high in the hospitality business. What will make your guests happy in the resort depends on the quality of attention your people can provide and the level of service they can deliver. So we need to be careful and ensure standards that will make our guests, comfortable and satisfied.

Just the other day, I was at the Golf Club with some old friends who had decided to meet up and shoot the breeze after a long, long time. We discussed handicaps, the state of the course, young talent with potential and old talent with a future. Then the time came to catch up on work related updates. When my turn came, I gave them an overview of what we were doing at AIRDA in the timeshare space. I think timeshare generated more discussions than the professions of others, and I found myself explaining industry developments to a very interested audience.

Then someone asked me, “Where do you see timeshare, in five years?”

When you make a timeshare decision at today’s prices, you get many happy returns to your dream vacation every year, for at least 25 years. You also have the flexibility to plan your vacation around lean work periods and getaway opportunities. At the rate hotel tariffs are fluctuating, the mere thought of spiraling room rents can make you unpack your bags.

Depending upon the resort and location, timeshare gives you multi-star comforts, without room rents – something you need to keep in mind when you are listing down plus points and features. Another aspect to look at is the range of activity options – I can’t think of many hotels that can come close to what timeshare can deliver at your favorite resort.

Way back, when I was much younger, a senior mentor of mine gave me a few useful tips that I am sure will help young marketing professionals of today. These are simple, easy-to-follow and implement. In fact, so simple that people will wonder why I am sharing them as action pointers.

But then, some of the most valuable tips from the Gurus have always been plain, simple and motivating..

In these days of increased consumer awareness, the important thing for us to do is underline the assurance that goes with resort owners in the organized sector of timeshare. These are timeshare companies with a commitment to the customer, to the industry and the people employed – directly, or indirectly.

I mentioned ‘organized sector’ in my opening paragraph to illustrate the two ways to look at timeshare in India. There exists an unorganized market with independent players who make their own rules on charges, fees, deliverables and customer experience. And then you have the organized sector, operating within a self-regulated body called the All India Resort Development Association (AIRDA). It is useful for end customers to evaluate the differences that emerge between the two, well before they sign the contract.

This month, I’d like to talk about one aspect of running a business that places our industry in the forefront: the digital marketplace. I’ve been a corporate warrior for many years and in our time there were no computers, no laptops, no mobile phones – come to think of it, we didn’t have the internet either. But I think we managed to get through our workdays smoothly – things got done as planned. (Almost, I guess.)
